We have developed an innovative technology to transform organic waste (from cities or
industries) into ethanol (acetic acid), from the anaerobic biodigestion of the acid phase.
TECHNOLOGY
The great advantage of the technology is not to affect food production, optimizing the
high investment in raw material for ethanol production and using a material available at
"zero cost". A ton of organic matter can be transformed into about 300 to 400 liters of
ethanol.
Process
The process is carried out in anaerobic biodigester, associated with hydrogenolysis with
UV – ultraviolet irradiation, being distilled and rectified by fractional distillation, in
hydrated ethanol fuel.
Yields range from 20% to 40% with carbon content, that is, from 35% to 40% by weight
of organic matter.
Findings
This process, already patented, was tested for 3 years at ESALQ. Our plant with a
receiving capacity of 1 ton per day of organic waste supplied our cars and ethanol was
also used for other purposes.
